Hakuba Goryu is a one-of-a-kind snow destination, catering to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities and persuasions. Here are five reasons Goryu needs to be on your must-visit list for your Hakuba adventure.
1. Sunrise Skiing
The early bird catches the beautiful sunrise over Hakuba Goryu. On weekends and holidays (December to early New Years), skiers can access the slopes from 7am (check the website for more details). There’s nothing more special than making the first tracks of the day while watching the sun rise to greet you over the Japanese Alps.
2. Moonlit Powder
If you’re more of a night owl, Hakuba Goryu is the only resort in the Hakuba Valley to offer night skiing every day of the season. Daily from 6 to 9:30pm the freshly groomed slopes wait under floodlighting, letting twilight thrill seekers glide beneath the stars.
3. Ski into Convenience at Escal Plaza
Ski and Five Goryu are the base of Hakuba Goryu, offering a wide range of services and amenities to make your day on the mountain smooth and enjoyable. Rent your ski gear here, and hit the slopes then enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants including Sol, serving many plant-based options, or recharge at Lift Up Coffee, a cafe serving Melbourne-style espresso. Relax in the onsen at Hakuba Goryu Hot Spring after shop for souvenirs for family and friends back home.
For families, there’s an indoor playground and a day care center, giving you the peace of mind to enjoy the slopes knowing your little ones are entertained. Escal Plaza is open from December 2 to March 31. Escal Plaza is also the best spot for a post-ski dinner without a reservation—which can be a rarity in town.
4. Terrain Parks for All Levels
Hakuba Goryu boasts four unique terrain parks catering to all skill levels. Newbies should start at recently opened Hop Step Park, on the beginner slope where first-timers can expect to safely learn the basics of skiing and snowboarding in a controlled environment, gaining confidence before tackling the main slopes.
Those looking for more of a thrill should check out Goryu Waves, a rhythmic skiing experience with continuous banked turns. Goryu Park, a freestyle park focused on jib, and Goryu Bumps, a consistently groomed mogul course, are not to be missed.
5. Sustainability at the Core
Hakuba Goryu is proud to be leading the way in eco-friendly resort management in Japan. In 2023, the resort moved to 100% renewal energy for all operations including lifts, gondolas, shops, restaurants, and snow machines. Night skiing has been powered by renewable energy since 2020, and from this season energy-efficient LED lighting will debut on all night slopes.
Hakuba Goryu’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by joining the Sustainable Resort Alliance (SRA), led by Protect Our Winters Japan (POW JAPAN), helping to reduce the carbon footprint of skiing.
